Making Small Talk
Making small talk is casual, light conversation often with no agenda. It is most commonly used in social and networking events and when you are conversing to somebody that you do not really know very much about. Making small talk with a part of your social life is extremely important. There are a lot of advantages to this, that we will go over below.
Avoiding Small Talk Being a social animal, we all have the need to make small talk as often as possible. However, making small talk is a great way to build relationships. Even if you just met somebody for the first time and have not been able to establish a relationship, avoid small talk and instead get into more detailed conversation with them. You will have a much better chance of getting to know the person that you are conversing with and form a much stronger relationship with him or her.
Making Conversation Easier If you make small talk topics easier to incorporate into conversations, you will be more likely to stick around and talk more. People want to be able to establish a connection with someone, and small talk topics make that easier. However, this should not be the main purpose of conversations. You need to get into deeper conversation if you truly want to get to know someone and get to know them on a more personal level. The more you can get into discussing more personal things, the more of a relationship you can develop.
What is the Most Entertaining? Another benefit of avoiding small talk topics is that it makes it easier to talk about the most entertaining things about your life. This is why it is always good to make a list of the interesting things that happen in your day. Instead of talking about what s the most exciting thing about your day, you can share some of your most entertaining facts.
Easy Conversation starters Do you have a friend who always seems to have something new to say? Do you find yourself having this conversation about subjects outside of what you would normally talk about? Sometimes people like to bring up current events, current movies, or current television shows to start a conversation. There are many different subjects that can be brought up in conversation. However, you need to start the conversation on topics that will help the other person relates to you and the conversation will go much better.
When it comes to humor Many people do not realize how powerful humor can be when trying to connect with other people. When you are having a conversation, remember that you can bring in some humor. You can even tell stories about some of the things you have done or things you are currently doing. When you are sitting back with someone, you may find that they will laugh at something you have said. This is a great way to make others feel comfortable and relax.
Do Not Be pushy Do not make any direct sexual requests during the course of the conversation. Do not make any jokes about sex or sexual innuendos. Do not use language that will make them feel uncomfortable. If you have a friend that is watching, make sure you turn your back during the entire conversation. It is very difficult to keep the conversation going when there is a lot of tension. In order to keep the other person comfortable, it is best to make sure that they are comfortable by not making any direct eye contact.
Remember that no matter how well you know someone, if they are not comfortable with you making small talk, the conversation is not going to work. When you are having a conversation, remember that it is time to relax and stop thinking about the recent events in your life. If you become anxious, it will only make it worse. Keep the conversation going by being humorous and interesting. Be friendly and have fun. When the other person relaxes, the entire conversation will flow into more personal topics.
