Public Speaking
The latest Chapman University Survey on American Fears found public speaking in No 50, just behind deaths (50), sharks (49) and chickens (also 49). However, there is a very real question that for many of us, public speaking may be a fear. A fear of embarrassment, a fear of being judged. And, as uncomfortable as that may be, it can be a very real motivator to keep going.
Some of the top public speaking fears of Americans include having to speak in front of a large audience, a nervous breakdown, talking for long periods of time, not looking or feeling comfortable, or even a public speaking fear of making people laugh. No matter what the topic or the level of experience, humor is a core component of effective oratory. Indeed, Dr. Robert McKenzie, a renowned speech pathologist and psychologist, has stated that humor helps overcome the stress of a presentation. He has also said that a better way to prepare for a presentation is by making an effort to be humorous. "I always try to make sure I'm relaxed," he says.
In other words, for the best possible chance to succeed, a good public speaking event requires planning and focus. A great deal of planning goes into keynote speaking events and these should be as much about ideas as they are about setting up and delivering a good show. You must understand and account for the needs of your audience and work within their limitations to ensure your message is delivered in a way that will build interest and make them feel part of the occasion.
Part of the planning process of keynote presentations is addressing the audience's particular limitations. In particular, this means addressing language, format, timing, and pace needs. It also means addressing any specific requested topics. For instance, one person may request that you address the topic of global warming. If your talk does not cover this topic, you may want to include some information on the subject. This will particularly important if your talk will include multiple audiences; for example, if you are giving a talk to a room full of scientists, you would want to know whether they want to learn more about alternative energy sources or alternative ways of combating global warming.
Another thing that is crucial to successful public speaking is your oratory. A bad orator can turn an interesting idea into an annoying one and drive away an attentive audience. Indeed, a bad orator can do just that-make an idea seem pointless and push an audience away. This is why Graham davies are especially important if you are giving a talk at a conference or seminar and want to appear as an authority.
Good body language is also an important part of public speaking. For one, good body language will allow you to project confidence. If you are presenting in front of many people, you will need to be confident in what you are saying. Your body language should allow the audience to feel as though you are at ease with the subject matter. One of the most effective ways to ensure that you project confidence is to use the Groskop technique. The Groskop method is simply a way of looking at your audience in the eye while speaking, making eye contact, and pausing your speech for a brief second before looking back.
Another key to public speaking is to be clear and concise. Clear pronunciation is especially important because accents and grammar rules often come into play. If you are delivering a speech to a roomful of scientific researchers, you want to make sure that you are giving your speech clear and precise. If you are giving a talk to a roomful of teenagers, on the other hand, you might be more concerned with making your speech entertaining rather than informative.
Finally, in order to succeed in giving a good and well-rounded speech, you will want to learn how to develop an agenda. A good agenda is necessary for any good public speaking effort because it will outline the main points that you want to cover. It will also set up the rest of the event, including any relevant information that will be brought up, such as facts about the case that you are talking about. Following these tips about how to give a good ted talk will ensure that you can make the most out of your next talk and get the most out of your own speaking experience.
